The world's longest-running experiment is buried in a secret spot in Michigan. In 1879, botanist William James Beal buried 20 bottles, each filled with seeds of 23 different common weeds. Beal, as a teacher at Michigan Agricultural College (now Michigan State University) influenced hundreds of botany and horticultural students, including LIberty Hyde Bailey.
